Special Issue on food nanotechnology for development of functional foods, personalized food, disease sensing and therapeutic delivery

FOCUS OF THE SPECIAL ISSUE

Food nanotechnology is a rapidly evolving field that integrates nanomaterials with food science to enhance food quality, safety and functionality. Although its applications in food packaging and preservation have been well-explored, emerging research is increasingly focusing on its potential for disease sensing and therapeutic delivery. Indeed, emerging research in food nanotechnology is pushing the boundaries of what is possible leveraging nanotechnology for food safety and quality. With advancements in nanomaterial design, biosensor integration, and targeted drug delivery, nanotechnology holds the potential to revolutionize personalized foods and healthcare. This integration of nanotechnology with food systems offers exciting prospects for health diagnostics, personalized medicine, and innovative treatments, especially for chronic diseases. However, ongoing research and rigorous safety assessments are essentially needed to transfigure to understand these benefits and to ensure the safe application of nanotechnology in food and medicine. The potential of food nanotechnology for disease sensing and therapeutic delivery is immense, it is crucial to address safety, ethical, and regulatory challenges. Ensuring that food-based nanomaterials are safe for consumption and do not pose health risks remains a priority in research. Regulatory frameworks are evolving and obligatory to evaluate the safety and efficacy of these novel systems, but more studies are needed to understand long-term effects on human health and the environment. This special issue delves on the emergent research prospects in food nanotechnology and it’s applications in disease sensing and therapeutic delivery.
