Sustainable Agroecosystem Development Bridging Research and Development for Food, Income, and Nutrition Security
Agricultural practices have evolved significantly over the past decade due to rising food demand and the introduction of new technologies in mechanization and specialized approaches, along with increased chemical usage. While these changes have improved production, they have also posed challenges to the farm ecosystem, impacting food production, agricultural income, and crop nutritional quality. The integration of sensing technologies, robotics, and the Internet of Things (IoT) has led to precision agriculture, promoting sustainability through eco-friendly soil management, waste reduction, decreased chemical use, and higher agricultural product quality. Robotic process automation and artificial intelligence have enhanced farming precision and nutritional quality.
Modern technologies have conserved water resources through methods like smart irrigation, reducing harmful chemical runoff. Sensing technologies generate agricultural data, which, when combined with machine learning, enhances farming practices. Deep learning techniques have improved soil erosion mitigation. Intelligent decision-making in plant health monitoring reduces plant diseases and crop failure. Plant-based sensors facilitate real-time plant status monitoring, ensuring yield improvement. Machine learning has reduced chemical fertilizer use in organic farming. These advancements promise to unify agricultural practices, connect research efforts, and improve yields and income. Sustainable agriculture requires smart, circular cities supporting maximum yields and economic support for farmers. However, addressing challenges is essential for global adoption. The expected tenfold increase in food demand in the next decade necessitates advanced approaches. Factors influencing crop quality and yield require further research. Sensing technology integration for sustainability needs enhancement. Validation of sustainability indicators is incomplete, demanding further research. Implementing artificial intelligence-driven decisions requires precise machine-learning strategies. Creating a sustainable agricultural ecosystem by leveraging technology for smart farming management is crucial. We invite researchers to contribute to "Sustainable Agroecosystem Development: Connecting Agricultural Research and Development Pathways for Improved Food, Income, and Nutrition Security."
