Development of active/intelligent packaging and its application in food preservation

The selection of proper packaging materials is important for the quality assurance and safety of foods. The conventionally used petrochemical-based plastics are poorly degradable and have resulted in serious environmental pollution. Alternatively, biopolymer (e.g. polysaccharides, proteins, lipids and their blends) based packaging technologies are on the rise due to their excellent biodegradability and environmental friendliness. Meanwhile, different active substances (especially those with antioxidant and antimicrobial activities) have been integrated with biopolymers to further develop active/intelligent packaging materials. These novel packaging materials have wide applications in extending the shelf life of foods and indicating the freshness of foods.

Considering the fast development in active/intelligent packaging technologies, this Special Issue mainly focuses on the development and characterization of active/intelligent packaging and its application in food preservation. Renowned international research teams will be invited to submit their recent findings and opinion in this research area. Meanwhile, researchers around the world are encouraged to submit their latest findings on these topics in form of research or review articles.
